FLASH: ’Pride Northshore’ parade approved by council

MANDEVILLE — The City Council voted 5-0 to approve a special event permit for the “Pride Northshore” parade down Lakeshore Drive scheduled for June 1st.

Queer Northshore submitted a special events application to the City of Mandeville for the parade down Lakeshore Drive for Saturday, June 1st, according to a permit application.

District III Councilwoman Jill McGuire asked the organizers for a concession. First McGuire asked that the parade time be reduced from 4-7 p.m. to 4-6 p.m.

Organizer Mel Manuel agreed, saying the group had already realized the original time range was too long.

McGuire also raised other questions, including if the requested eight police officers were enough, among other issues.

Police Chief Todd Schliem addressed safety and crowd control questions before the final vote, telling the room that he was very confident the event would be safe.

Several dozen supporters of the event crowded Council Chambers and many spoke in favor of the event. Only a handful spoke against.

  1. This is the worst thing that could have happened to St. Tammany! Be papered, they will want other area’s of the community to have similar events! Once you open that door, such will be to have more events!

  2. I’m sorry to say for all the haters out there. I don’t choose to see straight people all over each other on tv shows, in public. I don’t choose to see men all over woman and vise versa. I realize this is the south. But people have the right to be themselves. Remember the land of the free and the brave. Also remember you don’t want people trampling all over your right. The Bible also states. Golden Rule, precept in the Gospel of Matthew (7:12): “In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.

    1. You are absolutely correct….For those that are struggling with their own hidden secrets and agendas are merely hiding in the shadows reciting scriptures that they dont even practice….But yet they use it as a tool for things they dislike or hate…Must be really miserable living in such a beautiful world with an abundance of beautiful people of all cultures and diversity but yet decide to live inside of their heads with hate and greed….Sorry but the days of entitlement are over..find peace and some dignity for others different than YOU!!!……Enjoying the parade with great pride…I WILL..:):):)

  3. Are there boundaries for dress and behavior to fit Mandeville’s ” Family Friendly” criteria? Years a previous the council banned OMBA’S “Christmas Past” from singing Christmas carols, because ” there were 2 Muslims living on Lakeshore Dr.” It might offend them.
